How to Book the Life in the UK Test

Step-by-step booking guide with everything you need

Official source: Book only through GOV.UK Life in the UK Test. GOV.UK describes it as the only official government service for booking the test.

Before you book

Before booking the test, check that you actually need to take it. The Life in the UK test is required if you are applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or British citizenship. If you are under 18, aged 65 or over, or have a qualifying medical condition, you may be exempt.

Gather your identity details before starting the booking process. If you have an eVisa, GOV.UK says to use a share code. If you do not have or cannot access an eVisa, accepted ID can include a valid passport, a valid photo travel document, a valid ID card from the EU, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway, or a BRP/BRC. For BRP or BRC, GOV.UK says the test must be no later than 18 months after the expiry date printed on the card.

Step-by-step booking

Go to gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test to begin. You will need to create an account if you do not already have one. The process takes about 10 minutes.

Choose your preferred test centre from over 30 locations across the UK. Select a date and time that suits you — you must book at least 3 days in advance. Popular centres and time slots fill up quickly, so book early if you have a specific date in mind.

Pay the £50 test fee online by debit or credit card. Once payment is confirmed, you will receive a booking confirmation by email. Keep this confirmation safe — it contains your booking reference number.

What to bring on test day

Bring the original ID document you used when booking. This must be the same document — if your ID has changed since booking, contact the test centre before your appointment. Photocopies, screenshots, and digital copies are not accepted.

Your photograph will be taken at the test centre for identification purposes. You do not need to bring a passport photo separately.

You do not need to bring any stationery or equipment. Everything you need is provided at the centre. Mobile phones, bags, and personal belongings are stored securely during the test.

After the test

Your result is displayed on screen immediately after you finish. If you pass, you will receive a unique reference number (URN). You need this number for your ILR or citizenship application, because the Home Office uses it to check that you passed.

If you do not pass, GOV.UK says you can rebook as many times as you need. The fee is £50 for each attempt, so use the gap before rebooking to focus on the areas where you lost marks.

Accessibility and support

If you have a disability, health condition, or other needs that may affect your ability to take the test, you can make special requests when you book, for example if you need extra equipment or help accessing the centre.

Contact the Life in the UK test helpline on 0800 015 4245 to discuss your requirements. It is best to do this before booking so that the right support is in place for your test day.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I book the Life in the UK test?

Book only through the official GOV.UK Life in the UK test service. Avoid unofficial booking sites.

How far in advance do I need to book?

You must book at least 3 days before the date you want to take the test.

Should I book before I am passing mock exams?

If your deadline allows, wait until you are scoring above 80% on practice tests. That gives you a margin above the 75% pass mark and reduces the risk of paying for a retake.

What ID do I need for the Life in the UK test?

If you have an eVisa, GOV.UK says to use a share code. Otherwise accepted ID can include a valid passport, valid photo travel document, eligible European ID card, or BRP/BRC within the GOV.UK time limit.

What if my ID changes before the test?

Do not wait until test day. Contact the official booking service or update your booking if needed, because the centre checks the original ID against the details used to book.

Can I bring a photocopy or digital copy of my ID?

No. The test centre requires the original document. Photocopies, screenshots, and digital copies are not accepted.
