Roman Britain: names, dates, places

Keep the two invasions separate, then attach Boudicca and Hadrian's Wall to their locations.

  1. 55 BC

    Caesar failed

    Julius Caesar led the first Roman invasion of Britain.

  2. AD 43

    Claudius succeeded

    Emperor Claudius led the successful invasion and occupied almost all of Britain.

  3. Iceni

    Boudicca

    Queen in what is now eastern England; her statue is on Westminster Bridge.

  4. North

    Hadrian's Wall

    Built to keep out the Picts; Housesteads and Vindolanda are forts on the wall.

  5. 400 years

    Roman rule

    Roads, public buildings, law, new plants and animals.

  6. 3rd-4th c.

    Christianity appears

    The first Christian communities began to appear in Britain.
