Life in the UK Test Results: When and How You Get Them

What happens after you finish, where to check your result, and what to do next

On this page

Official sources: GOV.UK explains what happens at the test, including the 75% pass mark and the unique reference number. Results are kept in your Life in the UK account on the official booking service. LITUK is a free study guide and cannot see official results.

When you get your result

You find out on the day. After the 24 questions, you wait in the waiting area while staff confirm your result. The official booking service says they will tell you your result and give you your unique reference number (URN) before you leave. Allow up to 2 hours at the centre in total, including check-in.

The official FAQ says an email with your URN should arrive within 10 minutes of finishing. If it is not in your inbox, check your spam or junk folder. If nothing has arrived within 24 hours, contact the Life in the UK Test Helpline on 0800 015 4245 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm) or at support@lituk.psionline.com.

How to check your result online

Every result is listed in the results tab of your Life in the UK account, together with its URN:

  1. Go to gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test and select Start now.
  2. Sign in to the Life in the UK account you booked with.
  3. Open the results tab.

There is no separate results website, and no one else can look your result up for you. If you are having trouble signing in, our page on the official booking site and login explains where to get help.

If you passed

You pass with a score of 75% or more, which means at least 18 correct answers out of 24.

Keep your URN safe. GOV.UK says you need it to complete your settlement or citizenship application, and the Home Office uses it to check that you passed. You do not need a paper certificate: since 17 December 2019, the official service no longer posts pass letters. Your results email and account are the record.

If you took the test before 17 December 2019, you will have a letter with a 7-digit test reference ID instead of a URN. If you have lost that letter, GOV.UK says to send a letter explaining that you have lost it with your application.

Our guide to the unique reference number covers what it looks like and where you use it.

If you did not pass

Home Office guidance says you still get an email with a URN after a fail, but only a URN from a test you passed meets the requirement. GOV.UK says you can book again as many times as you need, and you pay £50 each time.

You are not given a list of the questions you got wrong, so the most useful next step is to find your weak topics yourself. Run a few practice sessions, note the topics where you hesitate, and book again when you are passing full mock exams with a margin. Our page on what to do if you fail has a short plan.

Does a pass expire?

GOV.UK does not give an expiry date for a pass. It says you do not need to take the test again if you have already passed it, for example if you passed for settlement and are now applying for citizenship. Use the URN from the test you passed.

Technical problems and complaints

If a technical fault stops you finishing, tell a member of staff straight away. The official FAQ says that if your test cannot be recovered, you can take it again on another day without paying.

To make a complaint, contact PSI at complaints@lituk.psionline.com or on 0800 015 4245 within 3 months of your test date. GOV.UK says you should get a response within 10 working days.
